Start the Clock

NOVEMBER UPDATE - The clock has started!  The clock in the "Henry Roush Bell Memorial Clock Tower" is ticking again.  Start the Clock committee members Jim Coursey, Doug Rose, Nancy Camp, Elton McGough and Glenda Bell have worked diligently to raise enough money to get the "town clock" going again.  All the money raised to start the clock was received from private donations.  A plaque thanking those that donated money will be placed inside the Old Courthouse at a special ceremony to be held on Saturday, December 9th at 4:00 PM.  Thank you to all those who donated!  All money that remains in the Start the Clock Fund, and all money raised in the future, will be used for maintenance and upkeep of the clock and clock tower.

OCTOBER UPDATE - Almost ready to chime again!  One of the new clock faces has been installed and the clock parts have been put back together in the tower.  Some repair still remains to get the clock ticking again, but we are almost there!  Also, some repair is needed inside the clock tower in order to protect the clock works in the future.  Once all the clock faces have been installed and the clock works are completely restored the "town clock" will be working again.  Once the clock is working again, a ceremony will be held to honor the event and all the wonderful citizens and businesses who have contributed to this historic occasion.

AUGUST UPDATE - The clock faces have been removed and repainted and the clockworks are in the process of being cleaned and repaired.  But there is plenty of work remaining that needs to be done.  The Committee hopes to raise enough money to repair the cupola both inside and outside.  The inside of the cupola needs to be repaired in order to keep the clock in good working condition once it is placed back inside the Courthouse.  Also, the outside of the cupola needs to be repainted.  So, thousands more dollars are needed to complete the project!

Now that the Old Courthouse has been renovated on the inside and out, there is one big question everyone has been asking us at City Hall, "so when are you going to fix the clock?" Hopefully, that time is near! In response to those questions, a committee has been formed to raise money to restore the four clock faces and the clock works. To get the ball rolling, $300.00 was donated and several local businesses and citizens have pitched in as well. An expert in tower clock restoration examined the clock and estimates about $8,500.00 is needed to put the clock in good working order.

If you would like to be able to see the clock "ticking" again, please send your donations to "Start the Clock" in care of Laura Brock, Elkton City Hall, PO Box 578, Elkton, KY 42220. Every dollar raised will go directly to the clock restoration. When the project is completed, an engraved plaque will be installed on the first floor of the Old Courthouse to thank those who donated money for this worthwhile project.
