City Information

In 1819 stagecoach operator Major John Gray donated land for the City of Elkton.  In 1820, Elkton was established and because it was located in the center of Todd County, Major Gray believed it should be the county seat.  Gray's plan called for the town to radiate from a two acre square.  In 1835 a courthouse was erected in the center of this square.  The "Old Courthouse" is the second oldest courthouse in the state.  This monument, still the centerpiece of town, stands proudly to welcome everyone that enters our warm, friendly community.

Today, Elkton is a small community of approximately 1,984 citizens.  Elkton is a slow paced town with all the advantages of being near larger cities.  You can be in downtown Nashville, Tennessee or Bowling Green, Kentucky in just under an hour, while Clarksville, Tennessee and Hopkinsville, Kentucky are about 20 minutes away.

RECREATION

Elkton is also very blessed with many recreational facilities nearby.  Within twenty miles of Elkton is Lake Malone State Park with Shady Cliff Resort and Marina.  Elkton is also located within seventy miles of Kenlake State Resort Park, Lake Barkley State Resort Park (pictured at right) and the Land Between the Lakes.  Many of these nearby state parks have newly renovated golf courses that are ranked tops in the state.  The Cities of Bowling Green, Kentucky (60 miles), Clarksville, Tennessee (20 miles), and Nashville, Tennessee (73 miles) provide numerous cultural attractions.
